چکیده
Electrotherapy with low-level direct current (DC) can induce antitumor effects in various tumor models. Applied in combination with certain anticancer drugs, it can significantly increase their effectiveness. It has been suggested that the demonstrated effects of electrotherapy arise from its modification of tumor blood flow. The effect of such treatment on blood perfusion of solid subcutaneous Sa-1 fibrosarcoma tumors in NJ mice was investigated with a 86rubidium extraction technique. Following electrotherapy, the relative tissue perfusion of tumors was decreased by more than 50%. Three days after treatment, partial reperfusion of tumors occurred. The dynamics of the perfusion changes induced by electrotherapy are in agreement with tumor growth dynamics following this procedure. The effect of electrotherapy on the blood supply of tumors may be the major mechanism of antitumor action in our model. Electrotherapy could be useful as an adjuvant local procedure to other treatment modalities that require a hypoxic environment for their effectiveness. The effect of application of short, intense electric pulses on tumor blood volume was investigated using albumin-(Gd-DTPA)30 contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). One of paired SA-1 fibrosarcoma tumors implanted in each flank of NJ mice was treated with electric pulses. MRI was performed dynamically before and after intravenous administration of albumin-(Gd-DTPA)3o (0.02 mmol Gd/k...

The wound-healing process has previously been modeled with exponential orwith linear curves. In the present study, we proposed a new model called the delayed exponential model, and compared all three models. Assessment of the models was based on healing data for two large groups of pressure ulcers in spinal-cord-injured (SCI) patients. The first group consisted of conventionally treated wounds ...
متن کاملGains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach
By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...
متن کاملImproved immunogenicity of tetanus toxoid by Brucella abortus S19 LPS adjuvant.
BACKGROUND Adjuvants are used to increase the immunogenicity of new generation vaccines, especially those based on recombinant proteins. Despite immunostimulatory properties, the use of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant has been hampered due to its toxicity and pyrogenicity. Brucella abortus LPS is less toxic and has no pyrogenic properties compared to LPS from other gram negati...

A rigorous microscale electrokinetic model for hydrogel-colloid composites is adopted to compute macroscale profiles of electrolyte concentration, electrostatic potential, and hydrostatic pressure across membranes that separate electrolytes with different concentrations. The membranes are uncharged polymeric hydrogels in which charged spherical colloidal particles are immobilized and randomly d...
